3 Songs From The Womb

Who likes music?

It would never be for me to say that people don't reach out with words and activities to try to prevent FASD. But songs have worked their way into the mix (pardon the pun) as another entity that almost no one knows about. At least that is my finding whenever I speak with someone about (Sir) Phil Collins' song, "Mama." Pretty much everyone older than 30 has heard the song but when asked what the song is about they are impossibly speech struck. Well I'll tell everyone now: "Mama" is about a baby in a drinking and drugging mothers' womb. So feel free to view Phil's song on YouTube here:

In my opinion, Phil was singing about his child. Did you know that Phil Collins has a son? His name is Simon. He has an FASD disorder and he often resides on Saltspring Island, BC, Canada. Like his father, he is a singer/songwriter. Maybe not a song from the womb, Simon Collins sings of AA and NA with the main theme of being "Powerless." That's the AA,NA way - using propoganda and cultlike meetings where brains meet to tell each other they are powerless over their drug. Well, Simon fell in over his head with a song called, you guessed it, "Powerless." I chose to use this song in this blog because when quitting to save a pregnancy every woman is directed to AA where they are called sick. Oh yeah, and their families too. So feel free to view Simon's song, done in Vancouver, BC, on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuuMGdNWhKQ   View Lyrics for "Powerless" at the bottom of page.

And then we go to Kate Bush. We all know smoking is bad for pregnancies. It doesn't cause FASD but does cause harm in the healthy development of the fetus. Absolutely everything in the mother's environment plays a role in the fetus' environment. So I use this song as another example whereby everything including alcohol play their roles. In Kate's song she enlikens smoking to an atomic bomb where by the end of the song she sits with a group of men in what appears to be radiation coveralls. I like Kate's video because the props guys made a plastic womb for her to sing from. Let the fetus do its job of becoming your baby.

No Booze. No Drugs. Being Real.

Comment Below Song Lyrics

"Mama" (Actually by Genesis)
I can't see you, mama.
But I can hardly wait
oh To touch and to feel you, mama
Oh, I just can't keep away
In the heat and the steam of the city
Ooh, it's got me running and I just can't brake
So say you'll help me, mama
'Cause it's getting so hard, ooh

Now I can't keep you, mama
But I know you're always there
You listen, you teach me, mama
And I know inside you care
So get down, down here beside me
Ooh, you ain't going nowhere
No, I won't hurt you, mama
But it's getting so hard, ooh
Ha ha ha, ha ha ha, awh
Ha ha ha, ha ha ha, awh

Can't you see me here, mama,
Mama, mama, mama, please?
Can't you feel my heart?
Can't you feel my heart?
Can't you feel my heart, ooh?
Now listen to me, mama
Mama, mama
You're taking away my last chance
Don't take it away !
Can't you feel my heart?

ha ha ha,ha ha ha awh

It's hot, too hot for me, mama
But I can hardly wait
My eyes, they're burning, mama
And I can feel my body shake
Don't stop! Don't stop me, mama
Ooh, make the pain, make it go away, hey
No, I won't hurt you, mama
But it's getting so hard, ooh

Now I conceit you, mama
But I know you're always there
You taunt, you tease me, mama
But I never, never, never can keep away
It's the heat and the steam of the city
Ooh, got me running and I just can't brake
So stay, don't leave me, mama
'Cause it's getting so hard, ooh

Don't go, no no don't go
No no no, don't go...
ha ha ha
dont go
ha ha ha awh
no dont let me go
dont go

"Powerless" (Simon Collins)
I can't take it on my own
I can't make it all alone
I'm powerless, yeah I confess
I lose myself in my excess
I'm powerless

Now I remember all I've done
Now I know why I was numb
I'm powerless, how I obsess
I lose myself till I'm' out of breath
resented all, I have to hide
been living with this shame inside

And I could lie to myself,
and say "I'm strong enough"
but I know in time I'll self destruct,
in the greatest 'scape and endless rush
And I could try to tell myself,
"There's no one I can trust"
but I know I need humility,
help to save my soul and sanity
Lord, I'll never give it up
I'm completely powerless

I'm completely powerless

I could run eternally,
from all the hurt inside of me
I'm powerless, and I can't rest
abuse myself till my life's a mess
the more I fight, the more I lie
I push my pain down with my pride

And I could lie to myself,
and say "I'm strong enough"
but I know in time I'll self destruct
in the greatest 'scape and endless rush
And I could try to tell myself,
"There's no one I can trust"
but I know I need humility,
help to save my soul and sanity
Lord, I'll never give it up
I'm completely powerless
I'm completely powerless
(I'm powerless)

I'm completely powerless

"Breathing" (Kate Bush)
Outside
Gets inside
Through her skin.
I've been out before
But this time it's much safer in.

Last night in the sky,
Such a bright light.
My radar send me danger
But my instincts tell me to keep

Breathing,
("Out, in, out, in, out, in...")
Breathing it in,
Breathing my mother in,
Breathing my beloved in,
Breathing it in,
Breathing her nicotine,
Breathing it in,
Breathing the fall-out in,
Out in, out in, out in, out in.

We've lost our chance.
We're the first and the last, ooh,
After the blast.
Chips of Plutonium
Are twinkling in every lung.

I love my
Beloved, ooh,
All and everywhere,
Only the fools blew it.
You and me
Knew life itself is

Breathing,
("Out, in, out, in, out...")
Breathing it in,
Breathing my mother in,
Breathing my beloved in,
Breathing it in,
Breathing her nicotine,
Breathing it in,
Breathing the fall-out in,
Out in, out in, out in, out in,
Out in, out in, out in, out...
("Out!")

"In point of fact it is possible to tell the
("Out!")
difference between a small nuclear explosion and
a large one by a very simple method. The calling
card of a nuclear bomb is the blinding flash that
is far more dazzling than any light on earth--brighter
even than the sun itself--and it is by the duration
of this flash that we are able to determine the size
("What are we going to do without?")
of the weapon. After the flash a fireball can be
seen to rise, sucking up under it the debris, dust
and living things around the area of the explosion,
and as this ascends, it soon becomes recognisable
as the familiar "mushroom cloud". As a demonstration
of the flash duration test let's try and count the
number of seconds for the flash emitted by a very
small bomb; then a more substantial, medium-sized
bomb; and finally, one of our very powerful,
"high-yield" bombs

"What are we going to do without?"
Ooh please!
"What are we going to do without?"
Let me breathe!
"What are we going to do without?"
Ooh, Quick!
"We are all going to die without!"
Breathe in deep!
"What are we going to die without?"
Leave me something to breathe!
"We are all going to die without!"
Oh, leave me something to breathe!
"What are we going to do without?"
Oh, God, please leave us something to breathe!"
"We are all going to die without
Oh, life is--Breathing.
